6.1 Polar Coordinates

OpenStax Precalculus 2e — Chapter 8, Section 8.3

Learning Objectives

  • Plot points in the polar coordinate system \((r, \theta)\)

  • Convert from polar to rectangular: \(x = r\cos\theta\), \(y = r\sin\theta\)

  • Convert from rectangular to polar: \(r = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2}\), \(\theta = \arctan(y/x)\)

  • Recognize that polar representation is not unique (multiple representations of same point)

Key Concepts

To be filled during study.

Practice Problems

To be completed with textbook exercises.

Section Summary

To be written after completing the section.

Study Notes

Personal observations and connections to engineering work.
