Purpose

The Linux Operations component documents cross-distribution Linux administration patterns. It covers system paths, package management, services, filesystem types, networking commands, desktop environments, and security hardening across Arch Linux, RHEL/Rocky/Alma, Fedora, Debian, and Ubuntu.

This spoke provides the OS-level foundation that other spokes build upon — ise-linux references it for system configuration, infra-ops for server administration, and automation-ops for Ansible target patterns.

Scope

In Scope

  • Multi-distribution administration (Arch, RHEL, Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, Alpine)

  • Package management (pacman, dnf, apt, apk)

  • System services (systemd, NetworkManager, SSH, firewall)

  • Filesystem management (ext4, xfs, btrfs, zfs, LUKS)

  • Networking tools (ip, ss, nmcli, resolvectl)

  • Desktop environments (Hyprland, GNOME, KDE, Sway, i3)

  • Security hardening (PAM, sudoers, SSH, audit)

  • Log management (journald, syslog, audit)

  • User and group administration

Out of Scope

  • 802.1X supplicant configuration (covered by ise-linux)

  • Infrastructure-specific server roles (covered by infra-ops)

  • Windows administration (covered by windows-ops)
