Priority Legend

  • P0: Critical - Life/career blocking, immediate attention

  • P1: High - Significant impact, active focus

  • P2: Medium - Important but not urgent

  • P3: Low - Nice to have, opportunistic

Philosophy

"The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now."

These objectives exist because the job market is volatile, skills depreciate, and standing still means falling behind. The strategy: diversify expertise across networking, security, software, cloud, and AI while building portable, demonstrable skills that transcend any single employer.

Objective Categories

Technical proficiencies that compound over time and transfer across roles.

Certifications

Credentials that validate expertise and unlock opportunities.

Decision Framework

Before adding new objectives, run through this filter:

Decision Framework: Should I Do This?

Before starting ANY new activity, run it through this filter:

  1. Which life goal does this serve?

    • If none → DON’T DO IT

    • If unclear → Find the connection first

  2. What’s the ROI relative to alternatives?

    • 1 hour on THIS vs 1 hour on THAT

    • Choose highest leverage

  3. Does this compound other investments?

    • Regex multiplies everything → HIGH priority

    • One-off skill → LOWER priority

  4. What’s the opportunity cost?

    • What am I NOT doing by doing this?

    • Is that trade-off acceptable?

  5. Is this the right time?

    • Some investments pay off later

    • CISSP after more experience = more value

Default answer: NO. Prove why it should be YES.

Integration with Daily Work

Objectives flow into daily worklogs:

  1. Weekly: Review objective progress in weekly reports (use retrospective template)

  2. Daily: Tag worklog entries with relevant objectives

  3. Monthly: Full objective review and adjustment

  4. Quarterly: Deep strategic review

Weekly Capture Template

Copy this to your WRKLOG for the week:

Anti-Patterns to Avoid

Anti-Pattern Description Detection

Shiny Object Syndrome

Starting new tracks before completing active ones

>4 ACTIVE tracks at once

Credential Hoarding

Collecting certs without applying knowledge

Cert without related project

Perfection Paralysis

Polishing instead of shipping

>2 weeks on same task

Rabbit Hole Diving

Deep-diving tangents that don’t serve goals

Can’t explain why this matters

Busyness Theater

Activity that feels productive but doesn’t move goals

No visible progress toward any North Star
